I had the privilege of presenting at the Utah Valley University Ethics Symposium at their second panel. With the Symposium theme of "Ethical Citizenship," I presented on how games can help players examine ethical dilemmas. I codified 3 principles that a game needs to meaningfully interact with ethics, and presented Fallout: New Vegas as the prime example of a game that examines ethical citizenship.
You can watch the speech here.
The Timpanogos Game Developers' Club gave me the honor of presenting for their July meeting in 2024. I spoke on what I called "The Mechanical Narrative of Game Design." I detailed what I considered to be the unique narrative strength of video games, how the mechanics help inform the story, calling out the similar game structures found in AAA games at the time as a detriment to their narratives. Feeling like the same game means the stories are robbed of the potential lasting impact they could have had with unique mechanics.
Unfortunately, no recording of the presentation exists. But you can ask people about it they'll say it's good I promise.
